One tailed vs two tailed9/23/2023 ![]() ![]() In a two tailed test, you are comparing the hypothesis that the population parameter (such as mean) is equal to a particular value against an alternative hypothesis that the parameter is more/less than this value. When using one tailed testing we are testing the possibility of a relationship is in one direction and totally disregarding the other side. If you are using a significance level of alpha, a one tailed test puts all the alpha to testing the statistical significance in the on direction of interest. The parameter is considered significantly different from the hypothesized value if the test statistic is above or below (α/2)100% if its probability distribution of a p value less than α.If the parameter falls into either of the critical areas the alternative hypothesis is accepted instead of the null hypothesis. Ho:µ=k Null hypothesis ,u=population parameter ,k particular value. In hypothesis testing, the null and the alternative hypotheses will take the form The two tailed hypothesis gets its name from testing the area under both of the tails of a normal distribution. The test is said to be two sided because its alternative hypothesis doesn’t specify whether the parameter is greater or less than the value specified. When using a two tailed test, you are comparing the hypothesis that the population parameter (such as mean) is equal to a particular value against an alternative hypothesis that the parameter is different from this value. Let’s say you are using a significance level of α (alpha),the two tailed test will divide your alpha level into two one in the left direction and the other in the right direction. ![]() We can also call these tests one sided and two sided for on tailed and two tailed respectively. The tail in this case refers to the test statistic for the particular analysis that you are doing. When doing any statistical test you will be faced with the task of deciding whether to use one tailed or two tailed test. ![]()
